For Kip Colvey, this may feel a bit familiar.

The 23-year-old New Zealand international on Wednesday was selected by the Colorado Rapids with the third overall pick in the 2017 MLS Waiver Draft, reuniting with his former national team coach and now-Rapids coach Anthony Hudson.

The 5-foot-10, 162-pound wingback was born in Hawaii, but has 15 caps for the All Whites, including both games of the Intercontinental Playoff series against Peru last month. He also played for New Zealand’s U-17 and U-23 teams.

Colvey, who the Rapids said can play on both sides of the field, originally signed with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2016 after being picked No. 49 overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. The Quakes chose not to pick up his option this offseason, sending him to the waiver draft.

Colvey spent his 2017 season on loan with Reno 1868 FC of the second-division United Soccer League, where he started 10 games. In 2016 he played in four games for San Jose (three starts) and notched one assist. He also appeared in six games (five starts) on loan with Sacramento Republic FC.

The Rapids added Colvey to their supplemental roster.
